St. Martin's.docx.pngStory of Saint Martin

As a young man, Martin was a soldier in the Roman army. On a very cold day he saw a scantily clad beggar. Martin took off his military cloak and cut it in half with his sword to share with the man. That night, he dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. Jesus said to the angels: “Martin, who is still but a catechumen, clothed me with this robe.” When Martin awoke, he knew he had to change his life and leave the army. Confirmed in his piety, he got baptized and later in life was acclaimed as the Bishop of Tours.

The Spirit that Unites…

One of the main tasks of theology is to find words that do not divide but unite, that do not create conflict but unity, that do not hurt but heal. Henri Nouwen

Yesterday nine members of our German church council wrestled with how to negotiate between traditional and contemporary elements and language in our worship services. The challenge was that the emotions advocating for both sides were strong. We had two opposite needs expressed, and then also several people who were “in the middle”. We began our session with prayer. Then we intentionally took time to listen. We listened to all voices and opinions. It took us a few hours to actually understand what the needs of the opposite desires were about. In the end we chose to leave the structure in a more traditional way, yet find a few creative solutions to make our service more contemporary. We decided to intentionally watch out before each service for ancient language that could be harmful and that either needs to be explained or at times even left out or changed. We ended with prayer all feeling heard and taken into account. The Spirit helped us remain passionate and engaged with each other instead of turning against or away from each other.

Prayer: God of unity, I thank You for our diversity in unity that we experienced yesterday. Thank you that what looked like possible conflict actually became an opportunity to get to know each other better. Thank you that Your Spirit helped us through open listening to overcome the divide. Your Spirit is the creative energy that helps us bridge the gap between our two thousand year old Christian tradition and our present everyday life. And we are grateful. Amen

The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all. 1 Corinthians 12:7

Daily Devotions on Watchwordsblog.com

Dear friends of the German church,
the past two years have been an amazing journey for me.
I did not plan or expect becoming a pastor again
20 years after my ordination in 1997 and after working
for 20 years in roles as a hospital chaplain, educator and counselor.
Thank you for the honor of allowing me to be your pastor.
In October 2016 I was invited by the German Fromm Verlag
to publish my first book “Gospel Sermons”.
This is a collection of the English version of my first year’s sermons.
Then in January of this year, I was invited to write my second book
“Paul’s Theoloy in Sermons”, which is a smaller collection
of my second year’s sermons in English, to be published soon.
And then also this January, I have started writing a daily
devotional blog that I would like to let you know about.
As I have grown up with daily devotions
and have engaged in daily reflections all my adult life,
I always wanted to start writing my own.
Biblical promises, meditation, prayer and
wisdom words nurture and strengthen me
when the “going gets tough”.
If you are interested, go to www.watchwordsblog.com.

Thank you for all the loving support you

have given me along the way.

It has been for me an inspirational

and transforming journey.

And I am looking forward to

this New Year together.

Wishing you many blessings,

Dorothea
